Starting Our New Unit: How the World Works
Grade 3 Weekly Blog - Beginning Our New Unit: How the World Works
This week, Grade 3 started an exciting new Unit of Inquiry: How the World Works. Our central idea is “Societies prepare for natural disasters.” The students showed great curiosity and engagement right from the beginning.
Unit of Inquiry - Learning About Earthquakes
To introduce the unit, the students listened to a story about an earthquake in Luma. After the read-aloud, they shared their thoughts, feelings, and ideas, and we collected questions and key points together as a class. This helped activate prior knowledge and encouraged thoughtful discussion.
Following this, students worked in small research groups to explore the question: What happens during an earthquake? Each group researched the topic, created a poster, and then presented their findings to the class. The presentations showed strong teamwork, growing research skills, and clear communication.
Mathematics - From Fractions to Angles
In Mathematics, we completed our work on fractions and began a new topic on angles. Using transparencies, students traced, compared, and explored different angles, developing an understanding of how angles can be measured and described.
Language / English - Exploring Poetry
In Language lessons, we continued working with poems. Students identified rhyming words, explored rhyme schemes, and answered questions about the meaning of a poem. This helped deepen their understanding of poetic language and structure.
We also had another posture class this week, where the students worked on body awareness, balance, and healthy posture. Through guided exercises and movement activities, they learned how good posture supports their well-being and helps them stay focused during learning time.
It was a thoughtful and engaging start to our new unit, and we are looking forward to learning more about natural disasters and how societies prepare for them in the coming weeks.
