Grade 3 – Our First Adventures Together!
This week in Grade 3 has been full of learning, creativity, and exciting experiences!
We began by thinking about our hopes for Grade 3. Each student wrote their ideas on post-its and shared them under three categories:
-
This year in Grade 3 I hope to…
-
I’m excited about…
-
I’m a little nervous about…
It was wonderful to see how thoughtful and honest the children were. Their ideas will guide us as we grow together as a learning community.
In our first Unit of Inquiry, we jumped into our topic: Who we are - Our bodies are composed of complex systems that are connected. We started with a KWL chart – Our Bodies to organize our thinking. The students wrote what they already know and what they want to know. We will return to the last column, what I learned, once we complete our unit. The children also set up a Wonder Wall, where they could pin their questions about the body and its systems. They can continue to add new questions anytime something they are curious about comes to mind. We also created a scavenger hunt, listing all the body parts and organs the students already knew. Then, we located different organs in the body, practiced drawing them, and discussed their functions. The children also made connections between organs, for example, how the heart and lungs work together.
To make learning fun, the children played a memory game with organs and their functions, and we enjoyed a read aloud of “Our Amazing Body”, which sparked even more curiosity and great questions.
Wednesday was an especially memorable day: Percussion Day! A percussion band from Munich, who is also performing at the Expo in Japan, visited our school. The musicians worked with the students to create a performance that was later shared with the whole school community and parents. The energy, rhythm, and teamwork were fantastic, and our students shone on stage!
It has been a busy, joyful week, and we are already looking forward to the learning and discoveries ahead in Grade 3.
