Preparing, Creating, and Celebrating – A Week of Learning and Leadership in Grade 3

Grade 3 Weekly Blog – Learning How the World Works

This week in Grade 3, we continued exploring our Unit of Inquiry “How the World Works” with a focus on earthquakes and how societies prepare for natural disasters. The students showed great curiosity, responsibility, and teamwork throughout our learning.

Unit of Inquiry – Understanding Earthquakes

We began by creating posters explaining how an earthquake happens. Students worked collaboratively to illustrate and describe the process, then confidently presented their findings to the class. It was wonderful to see them developing both their research and communication skills.

Afterwards, we discussed the importance of being prepared. Together, we designed an emergency kit, with each student drawing and explaining why specific items are necessary in case of an earthquake. This helped them understand the concept of preparedness and responsibility in a very practical way.

We also explored safety during an earthquake. First, we identified actions that are not safe, and then we gathered ideas about what we should do during an earthquake. Building on this knowledge, the students worked in groups to design their own earthquake drill, as they will soon be leading the next drill for our school community. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to take ownership of their learning and show leadership.

Mathematics – Exploring Angles

In Mathematics, we are nearly at the end of our unit on angles. Students compared different angles, identified and named them correctly, and discussed their properties. Their understanding and confidence with angle vocabulary have grown noticeably.

Language – Poetry and Creative Writing

In English, the students wrote their own fun poems, experimenting with rhythm and rhyme. We also read and discussed poetic stories together, thinking about meaning, structure, and expression. It has been lovely to see their creativity and imagination shine through their writing.

Culture Day

On Wednesday, we celebrated Culture Day with a colorful parade and many wonderful performances. There were special presentations for Chinese New Year, and we enjoyed visiting different food stands representing countries from around the world. It was a joyful celebration of diversity and community.

It has been another busy and meaningful week in Grade 3. We are proud of the students’ engagement, teamwork, and growing sense of responsibility.
