A Joyful Week of Learning and Christmas Cheer
Weekly Learning Snapshot – Grade 3: Building Community & Celebrating Together 🎄
This week in Grade 3 was full of joy, collaboration, and meaningful learning as we moved deeper into our unit “How We Organize Ourselves”—all wrapped in the spirit of Christmas!
Unit of Inquiry – Understanding Community & Society
As inquirers and thinkers, students explored what makes a community function well.
We investigated:
-
What is a community?
-
Who belongs to our school community?
-
What responsibilities do these members have?
-
What happens when people in a community don’t work together or rules are not followed?
Students discussed these ideas with classmates, demonstrating strong communication and social skills.
We also watched a short film about society and community, which helped us compare the difference between the two. Students then illustrated their understanding by drawing “What is a society?” and explaining it in their own words.
A highlight was our creative task “My Community Superpower,” where students imagined the unique positive impact they could bring to a community—showing wonderful agency and responsibility.
Language / English – Presenting Our Collector Cards
In Language, students proudly shared their self-made animal collector cards.
They researched facts, organized information, and presented confidently to the class—continuing to develop skills connected to communication, research, and building vocabulary.
Mathematics – Exploring 2D Shapes
In Maths, we began our new topic on 2D shapes.
Students identified, named, and described shapes using mathematical vocabulary, building their thinking and problem-solving skills.
Christmas Highlights
This week was also filled with festive joy: Every day, the children looked forward to opening our class Advent calendar, which has brought daily excitement and joy into our classroom.
On Tuesday, we enjoyed a beautiful Christmas jazz concert—a magical performance that brought the whole school community together.
On Friday, one of our class mothers visited and read a wonderful Christmas story to the children. We also baked and decorated Christmas cookies, working together like a true caring community. The classroom smelled like a holiday bakery, and the students’ creativity shone through every cookie! It was a warm and cosy moment that added beautifully to our festive week.
