Community, Creativity, and Christmas Magic in Grade 3

Grade 3 Weekly Blog – Exploring How We Organize Ourselves

This week, Grade 3 officially launched Unit 3: How We Organize Ourselves, and our learners were immediately immersed in meaningful inquiry connected to citizenship, community, and responsibility. Using their Thinking and Research Skills, the students engaged in several hands-on provocations designed to activate prior knowledge and spark curiosity.

Exploring Citizens and Their Roles

We began by looking at a variety of citizens in a community—such as a doctor, sanitation worker, teacher, firefighter, politician, parent, and student.
Students reflected on guiding questions connected to our Line of Inquiry: Citizens in different societies:

  • How do they contribute to society?

  • What responsibilities do they have?

This discussion helped students recognize how different roles support a functioning community and how everyone’s actions can impact others.

Puzzle of Society – We All Matter

Next, each child received one paper “puzzle piece” and illustrated how a citizen can contribute to society.
When we put all pieces together, the class created one large societal puzzle, representing that: Every individual plays an important role, our contributions are interconnected and responsibility and cooperation help communities thrive.

This visual metaphor strongly supported our understanding of responsibility, function, and interconnectedness.

Mini-Voting Simulation – Citizens Make Decisions

One highlight of the week was a Mini-Voting Simulation, where students explored how citizens make decisions and solve shared problems. We used simple picture cards showing school-related issues: Noisy classroom, playground fights, lost items, too much trash and people not sharing. Students worked in groups to discuss one problem and propose a solution. This activity beautifully linked to Function, Responsibility, Caring, and Rights & Responsibilities within a community.

Students then created group posters summarizing their chosen problems and solutions—great collaborative work! Next week, we are going to share our ideas, everyone will vote using paper ballots and ballot boxes. We will count the votes, celebrate the “winning” solution, and reflect on: "How does voting help communities?" and "Why is it important to make fair decisions together?"

Math – Multiplication and End-of-Unit Test

In Mathematics, we continued exploring multiplication strategies and wrapped up the unit with the end-of-unit assessment. The students demonstrated strong understanding and great perseverance—well done, thinkers!

English / Language – Listening & Information Skills

In English, we practised listening comprehension and recording facts, focusing this week on sharks. Students learned how to pull out key information from an audio text and organize facts clearly.

We also created collector cards, which the students illustrated and designed themselves. They are excited to present their cards to the class next week!

We also decorated our school Christmas tree with our beautiful student-made ornaments, which the children were very proud of. Today, we celebrated our annual Christmas Lighting. Mr. Inman read a festive story, we sang together as a community, and then we were introduced to the little Christmas gnomes who will now be hiding around the school building. From today onward, the students will have the joyful responsibility of finding them each day — a playful way to build observation skills and enjoy the holiday spirit.

It was a rich and engaging week of inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking. Grade 3 continues to grow as responsible, reflective young citizens—well done, everyone!
