🌍 Innovators in Action: Grade 3 Water Protectors

Grade 3 Weekly Reflection – Inquiring How We Share and Protect Water πŸ’§πŸŒ

This week in Grade 3, we continued our Unit of Inquiry “Sharing the Planet” with a strong focus on water as a precious global resource. Our young inquirers demonstrated excellent research, thinking, and communication skills as they explored how people around the world access, protect, and use clean water.

We began the week by presenting our “My Clean Water Machine” designs. Each student created their own invention to help people access clean water, describing how it works and how it supports communities. The presentations were thoughtful and imaginative — a wonderful example of how Grade 3 students take agency and apply their learning creatively.

Next, students reflected on real-life action by asking: “How can I save water?”
Each child selected one daily action — such as taking shorter showers, turning off the tap while brushing teeth, or reusing water when possible. They have committed to doing this action every day, and we are tracking their progress together. This was a meaningful opportunity for students to connect learning to action and demonstrate the PYP attribute of being Caring and Responsible.

In groups, we extended this inquiry to explore:

  • How can schools save water?

  • How can families save water?

  • How can cities save water?

  • How can factories and farmers save water?

Students created group posters and presented their findings to the class. Their posters were informative, creative, and showed strong collaboration and understanding of how different communities share responsibility for sustainable water use.

We also researched “Water Around the World.” Each student chose a country and investigated questions such as:

  • Does this country have enough clean water?

  • How do people use water there?

  • How do people protect or save water in this place?

Students then created an illustration to show how water is used in that country. This activity encouraged global awareness and helped the children develop a deeper understanding of fairness, access, and equity, key concepts in the PYP.

Mathematics

In Maths, we completed our unit on addition and subtraction of whole numbers, finishing with generalising odd and even numbers. Afterwards, we started our new topic: Probability.
Through hands-on experiments with coins and dice, students predicted outcomes and tested their ideas, discovering the meaning of certain, likely, unlikely, and impossible. The class showed strong thinking skills as they reasoned, compared results, and reflected on their predictions.

English / Language

In English, we revisited the past, present, and future tenses using our class text “Our Wonderful World.” Students identified the tenses in context and practiced using them in their own sentences.
We also began working with alphabetical order and dictionary skills, helping students become more independent and confident readers and researchers — an important part of PYP language development.

St. Martin Celebration

On Tuesday, we enjoyed a beautiful St. Martin celebration at school. The event included a short performance by students, songs from the choir, and a magical lantern walk with the children’s handmade lanterns. Afterwards, everyone shared warm punch and traditional WeckmΓ€nner. It was a lovely community moment filled with light, joy, and togetherness.

It has been a week full of inquiry, action, creativity, and collaboration. Our Grade 3 students continue to grow as balanced, reflective, and caring learners, committed to understanding how their choices impact the world around them.
