Grade 3 Weekly Reflection – Thinking About How We Share Our Planet

This week, Grade 3 continued our Unit of Inquiry, “Sharing the Planet,” with a special focus on rivers and how they are essential for communities, nature, and life on Earth. Our young Thinkers used their research skills to explore why rivers are so important and how they are used in different ways by people around the world.

As part of our new River Panel activity, students were introduced to four key community roles — the mayor of a city, a farmer or fisherman, a factory owner or environmentalist, and a mom, dad, or child. Using their prior knowledge and critical thinking skills, each student considered how people in these roles depend on rivers and water, and what challenges they might face in sharing this vital resource. They then wrote a short statement to explain why water is important to their role and how they could share it responsibly with others.
Next week, we will bring these ideas together in our class panel discussion, where students will present their viewpoints and collaborate to find fair and sustainable solutions.

In Mathematics, we continued working on addition and subtraction of whole numbers, practicing different strategies to solve problems accurately and efficiently. The students showed persistence and balance as they challenged themselves with increasingly complex equations.

In English, we began our new unit, Exploring Earth, where we focused on understanding new vocabulary in context. The students explored book introductions, key words, and glossaries, developing their comprehension and language inquiry skills as they discussed the meaning of unfamiliar words.

We also had a wonderful celebration of Halloween today! Thanks to the amazing support from our parents, the classroom was filled with excitement, delicious treats, and lots of creative costumes. It was a fantastic way to end the week with laughter and joy.

Finally, we said goodbye to our intern Lena, who has been with us for the past eight weeks. We are so grateful for her enthusiasm, kindness, and all the ways she supported our learning journey. She will be truly missed by both students and teachers alike.

It has been a week full of inquiry, reflection, and community spirit — a wonderful example of how our Grade 3 students continue to grow as balanced and thoughtful learners who care about the world around them.
