Grade 3 Weekly Reflection – Thinking About How We Share Our Planet

Image
This week, Grade 3 continued our Unit of Inquiry, “Sharing the Planet,” with a special focus on rivers and how they are essential for communities, nature, and life on Earth. Our young Thinkers used their research skills to explore why rivers are so important and how they are used in different ways by people around the world. As part of our new River Panel activity , students were introduced to four key community roles — the mayor of a city , a farmer or fisherman , a factory owner or environmentalist , and a mom, dad, or child . Using their prior knowledge and critical thinking skills, each student considered how people in these roles depend on rivers and water, and what challenges they might face in sharing this vital resource. They then wrote a short statement to explain why water is important to their role and how they could share it responsibly with others. Next week, we will bring these ideas together in our class panel discussion , where students will present their viewpoint...

This week, Grade 3 continued to explore our Unit of Inquiry, “Sharing the Planet,” by thinking deeply about how humans interact with the environment. Our young Thinkers have shown curiosity, reflection, and creativity as they expanded their understanding of natural resources and how they are used around the world. We started the week by reviewing the water cycle , creating beautiful and detailed illustrations that showed how water moves through our planet. The students demonstrated strong research and thinking skills as they labeled each stage and explained the process in their own words. Later, we watched an informative video about gemstone mining . Inspired by what they learned, the students created their own quizzes for their classmates — a fun and interactive way to review key ideas and practice their communication and collaboration skills . We also compared images of a healthy forest and a deforested area , reflecting on the visible changes and their causes. This led to grou...

Grade 3 Weekly Reflection – Exploring “Sharing the Planet” 🌍

Image
This week, Grade 3 started our brand-new Unit of Inquiry, “Sharing the Planet.” We began by observing and comparing two powerful images — one of a girl carrying water and another of a boy drinking clean water from a tap. The students showed wonderful thinking and communication skills as they discussed what they noticed and how these two pictures are connected to access to resources . Following our reflections, the students wrote a diary entry from the girl’s point of view, imagining her daily life and feelings. They then shared their writing with the class, showing empathy and creativity. For the boy, their task was to research where our water actually comes from and to write a short report or explanation about it. These activities linked beautifully with our Language focus , as we are learning about text types —such as diary entries and reports—and how writers use them to express ideas and share information. We also watched a short video to review the water cycle and revisited k...

This week, our Unit of Inquiry came to an exciting end! To consolidate our learning about the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems , the students participated in an online quiz supported by short videos. We also had thoughtful class discussions about healthy and unhealthy habits for the heart . The students showed their ability to be reflective thinkers , considering the consequences of lifestyle choices and identifying actions they can take to keep their bodies strong and healthy. They also demonstrated wonderful student agency by creating their own games and quizzes in groups. These activities allowed them to review, reflect, and consolidate their knowledge in a fun and interactive way. The creativity of the games was impressive, and everyone enjoyed trying out the different activities their classmates had designed. In Mathematics , we continued to practice our understanding of time . The students worked hard to distinguish between a.m. and p.m. , as well as to make cl...
