Grade 3 – Our Week of Inquiry and Learning
This week in Grade 3, our Unit of Inquiry focused on the respiratory system. The students were true inquirers as they explored how breathing works and why it is so important for our bodies.
We began with a practical exercise where the children observed their breathing at rest and then compared it to their breathing and heartbeat after jogging on the spot. This led to a thoughtful class discussion about the changes they noticed. Each student also researched and shared one key fact about the respiratory system with the class.
Throughout the week, we used different strategies to deepen our understanding. We worked on a matching worksheet to connect organ names with the respiratory system, and drew the breathing path while labeling the body parts involved. Using pictures, the students showed the way of the air through the body and answered a fun yes/no questionnaire to test their knowledge. In groups, they created posters about The Journey of the Air and later wrote their own stories called “My Air Journey”, which they enjoyed reading aloud to their classmates.
We also worked together on a mind map about "How can we keep the system healthy?". From this, the students developed a Lung Health Plan, creating posters and giving short presentations to the class. As an action step, they designed daily exercises to keep the lungs healthy and created a math-linked chart showing the many ways we can take care of our lungs. To finish the week, the children took part in an online quiz about the respiratory system and had an exciting learning experience exploring human anatomy with VR-glasses.
In English, we practiced using headlines and continued to build and strengthen our vocabulary. Students explained words in their own way, practiced pronunciation, and applied their new vocabulary in sentences.
In Maths, we focused on understanding place value and challenged ourselves with plenty of mental arithmetic exercises to improve fluency and confidence.
It was a week full of inquiry, action, and reflection. Grade 3 showed curiosity, creativity, and great teamwork in all their learning, and we are looking forward to continuing our journey next week!
